Walter Edmundson Bailey

Walter Edmundson Bailey was born in New York on 7/20/1922 to Charles Bailey Sr (Click for Feature article on Bailey Family). and to Mary Bailey. He had a brother Charles and a sister Edith and the family lived at 508 Milton Road and were members of the Church of the Resurrection.

His father, Charles Sr., was a stone-brick mason who worked as part of the WPA program. His family was one of the oldest and best known in the village. He was a member of the Boy Scouts attended Rye High School, Class of 1940.

Walter enlisted in the U.S. Navy in August 1940 two months after he left Rye High School and served during WWII and the Korean War. Walter received his basic training at Newport RI. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor he was serving aboard the carrier USS Anzio which left the naval base a few days before the attack.

During WWII, Walter's brother, Seaman 1/c Charles W. Bailey Jr., was lost in the sinking of the USS Juneau in a naval battle off the Solomon Islands in November, 1942.

By 1952 Walter had 12 years of Naval service. He had obtained the rank of Aviation Boatswain's Mate 3rd Class and was serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS KEARSARGE CV-33. Service number assignment was 2237834.

During his service in the Korean War, Navy Petty Officer Third Class Bailey experienced a traumatic event which ultimately resulted in loss of life on October 11, 1952. Recorded circumstances attributed to: Non-Hostile Death. Incident location: Korea.

On October 11, 1952, the ship's helicopter, while being parked with rotors engaged, tipped over killing four crewmen, including Walter, and injuring six.

He was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Bailey who gave his life for his country.

Walter Edmundson Bailey body was returned home and he was buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Rye, NY.
Walter is remembered at the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington. This is a National Parks Service and American Battle Monuments Commission location.
